The island was gazzetted as a State Park in 1978 (which covers three islands with Tiga as the biggest) to protect the natural environment including stunning reefs, marine life and terrestrial flora and fauna. Pulau Tiga has been formed from the eruption of several mud volcanoes, which have built its present height of more than 100m above sea level. Several active mud basins still can be found on the island, especially at the summit after a 20 mins jungle trek.
